History of Osteopathic Medicine in Maryland
1914 • D.O.'s are granted limited licensure permitting OMM practice only through Maryland's "Osteopathic Practice Act".
1966 • American Medical Association declares that D.O.'s are physicians. The Maryland Medical practice act is amended to include D.O.'s as Physicians and Surgeons with a full medical license.
1967 • An attempt is made to secure a D.O. seat on the Medical Board of Examiners. This attempt fails and D.O.'s continue to be governed by the Osteopathic Board of Examiners
1979 • Lawrence Silverberg, D.O. creates the Maryland Association of Osteopathic Physicians (MAOP) and holds it's first meeting- three of the eight D.O.'s in Maryland are in attendance.
1981 • The Osteopathic Board of Examiners is sunsetted and all M.D.'s and D.O.'s are governed by the Maryland Board of Examiners (MBOE). The MBOE is subsequently renamed the Board of Physicians' Quality Assurance (BPQA).
1992 • MAOP begins efforts to increase membership and works with the AOA to become a divisional society.
1993 • MAOP Articles of Incorporation are accepted and approved. MAOP is officially founded as a non-profit organization in Maryland.
1998 • MAOP hires an executive director to run MAOP.
2002 • Persistent efforts by MAOP pay off when Governor Parris Glendening appoints Ruth Robinson, D.O. to the BPQA. This was the first time in history that the Maryland licensing board has seated a D.O.
2003 • The BPQA is restructured and renamed the Maryland Board of Physicians (MBOP). MAOP lobbies for and receives a designated seat on the MBOP. Ruth Robinson, D.O. is appointed to this designated D.O. seat. In addition, MAOP forms a joint membership initiative with the Maryland State Medical Society (MedChi)
2005 • Kevin Gerold, DO is appointed to the D.O. seat on MBOP.
2009 • There are currently over 600 D.O.'s in Maryland
